Varicose Veins: Not Just a Female Condition

A common misconception would have you believe varicose veins are a problem peculiar only to women. Not so.

While statistics show that woman are indeed more likely to suffer from them, a quarter of all those afflicted are men. However, women seek treatment for spider and varicose veins in far greater numbers than men.

Why is this? It seems some men dismiss these enlarged veins as little more than a cosmetic issue, but that’s a dangerous assumption on their part. Discoloration, bleeding, skin ulcers, and a “heavy leg” sensation can result if untreated, warns an article on the Men’s Health website. Other symptoms such as throbbing, cramping, swelling, and a decrease in mobility can also occur, not to mention considerable pain.

The causes for swollen veins in men include genetics, sedentary behavior, aging, weight gain, frequently wearing tight clothing strenuous activity, trauma, and prolonged standing are risk factors for men. Blood accumulates in the lower extremities and can pool in these veins, expanding the vessel walls which then lose their tautness.

Developments in treatment now make it much easier to get rid of these troublesome things. Lasers can target the swollen veins and close them. There are several other treatments for varicose veins, ranging from sclerotherapy, where a chemical is injected to close off the vein, to more extensive surgeries that involve removing veins from the body. Your doctor is likely to recommend some lifestyle changes to avoid a recurrence of the condition.

Bear in mind that varicose and spider veins are of the superficial kind, and do not directly affect blood flow to and from the heart. They can be closed or removed without affecting circulation in the limb.

Spider veins are a smaller, less prominent version and can also be found on other parts of the body such as the face. These can be eradicated by laser treatments.

The preferred treatment at Vein and Skin Laser Center for vein issues is thermal ablation, which uses lasers or high-frequency radio waves to direct heat energy to affected areas.
