Varicose Veins in Atlanta, GA

Vein & Skin Laser Center performs varicose vein treatment for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Varicose veins are extremely common and affect millions of people in the United States. Venous reflux is often the underlying cause of varicose veins.   This type of vein issue sometimes forces people to dramatically change their lifestyles, especially when they have to stand during their work day, and can no longer tolerate being on their feet.

Varicose veins can be a result of genetics, excess weight, prolonged standing, inadequate exercise, pregnancy or a damaged saphenous vein. Varicose veins are formed when the valves in the saphenous vein are damaged.   The veins near the skin surface are stretched and distorted from the increased pressure caused by blood flowing in the wrong direction. The underlying cause of varicose veins is venous reflux in the saphenous vein. These are often painful and unattractive, but they are rarely life-threatening.

Traditionally, patients have had only a couple of options for treating varicose veins, depending on how severe they are.   Exercising, dieting, wearing support hose and making general life-style changes were some of the common regimen that had been proven helpful to a patient’s varicose vein issues. Although these changes helped patients with mild cases lessen the pain and further deterioration of the vein, they were not solutions to better vein health.

The Closure® procedure is an outpatient treatment that is offered at Vein & Skin Laser Center. Patients who suffer from the discomfort of varicose veins no longer need to undergo general anesthesia and surgery to get relief from their symptoms. This procedure is done in one day under only a local anesthetic.

Patients can also have the visible varicose veins removed in a procedure called “phlebectomy.” This is a surgical technique that was developed in the 1950s. The procedure consists of removal of the diseased veins through a series of very small incisions. Phlebectomy alone, however, does not focus on the valves in the saphenous vein, which created the problem and can cause varicose veins to return.

The removal, or stripping, of the saphenous vein is another option for varicose veins. By removing the saphenous vein, blood is diverted to other veins with competent valves. In many cases, stripping eliminates the pain associated with varicose veins and greatly reduces the potential for recurrence without the need for further intervention.

While cosmetic improvement is often a factor in seeking treatment for varicose veins, Vein & Skin Laser Center understands that relief from pain is often the primary concern for patients in Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Our physicians use advanced diagnostic techniques to choose the best non-surgical or minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of varicose veins and other venous disorders to ensure that both aesthetic concerns and painful symptoms are addressed simultaneously, effectively and safely.
