Spider Vein Treatment in Atlanta & Decatur, GA

Spider veins are small, thin, branch-like veins(blood vessels) that can appear on the legs or face. They appear in the superficial skin and are red ,blue or purple in color. It is possible for the veins to cover a very large area of skin. The condition is related to increased pressure in the blood vessels. Normally, the condition is strictly cosmetic and can cause pain or other physical conditions. They can also be associated with a more serious problem called venous reflux which can be easily treated. Female hormones may play a role in their development. Puberty, bithcontrol pills , pregnancy, or hormone replacement therapy may contribute to them. They also appear after an injury or as a result of wearing tight banding girdles or hosiery. Spider veins tend to be hereditary and genetic in susceptibility, but can also be related to sun exposure. About 75 percent of the female population has this condition, and it is rarer in males. Spider veins or star bursts are so called because the series of veins often radiates out from the center. They may also appear as fine lines or branches from a single trunk. Unsightly veins can be a nuisance! The experienced physicians at the Vein & Skin Laser Center will assist you in every step of the way to attain more healthy looking skin free of spider veins!

A common method of treating spider veins in the legs and ankles is with the use of sclerotherapy, an injection procedure which does not require anesthesia. Sclerotherapy was first introduced in the 1930’s and has been a very successful method, causing few side effects, if any. The goal is to permanently remove unwanted spider veins and the pain that may be associated.

During each session, a solution is injected into the vein, causing it to collapse. The procedure is safe and pain is minimal. The veins are not an essential part of the venous system. Usually, the veins respond and disappear in three to six weeks. Sclerotherapy requires around 30 minutes per session and depending on the patient, about two to six sessions are needed to achieve desired results.

Following the procedure, normal activity may be resumed and exercise is encouraged to aid in circulation and the recovery process, although strenuous activity is not recommended. The doctor will have you wear compression stockings to help prevent blood clots. Bruising and spotting may occur but will vanish over time.

Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure including individuals with certain medical conditions. For more information, contact one of our clinics in Atlanta, GA or Decatur, Georgia.
