Sclerotherapy in Atlanta, GA

Vein & Skin Laser Center uses sclerotherapy to treat spider veins for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Sclerotherapy is an injection-based procedure that can be easily performed during an office visit. Sclerotherapy not only offers good cosmetic results, but is also reported to relieve pain symptoms in 85% of the cases.

Sclerotherapy is the injection of chemicals into diseased veins to effectively glue the vein shut. It can be performed safely with little discomfort. Depending on the patient’s condition and desired results, between two and six sclerotherapy sessions (each typically less than 30 minutes) are needed to achieve optimum results.

There is virtually no downtime. Sclerotherapy patients are encouraged to continue their normal activities, particularly exercise, since circulation helps promote recovery. Patients have reported playing tennis, walking several miles or returning to work immediately after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that uses an injected solution to target spider veins. Spider veins are small, thin veins, which are red, blue, or purple and commonly appear on the face and legs. These veins can be safely removed because they are inessential to the venous system.

How does this treatment work?

First, the skin is cleansed with an antiseptic solution. The skin is then stretched, and the sclerosing solution is administered into the problem veins with one injection per inch. The quantity of injections depends on the person, but there are typically 5 to 40 injections made per treatment. Compression tape is placed on the area after the treatment is completed.

How many treatments are required?

Multiple treatments are usually required for maximum results, although the benefits will be visible after one session. The original spider veins will be completely diminished with this procedure.

Is Sclerotherapy safe?

Yes, Sclerotherapy is safe. Medical complications are extremely rare.

Will there be any downtime?

This procedure requires little downtime. Support hose that are placed over the bandages will be provided to ensure healing. Patients are encouraged to walk to prevent blood clots. Patients should try to avoid prolonged standing, squatting, sitting, heavy weight lifting and/or jogging.

What are the results?

There is a remarkable difference between a treated leg and an untreated leg. The results of the skin on the legs will appear clearer, healthier, and younger.

How soon will results appear?

You will see a dramatic difference quite quickly. When the compression bandages are removed, there will be typical bruising and reddish areas at the injection sites. The bruises will diminish with time. In some cases, there is some residual, brownish discoloration which may take a while to completely fade.

How long does Sclerotherapy last?

By the end of the procedure, the veins that have undergone treatment will be permanently destroyed. However, the treatment will have no effect on newly appearing veins that grow over time.

Who should avoid Sclerotherapy?

Individuals with hepatitis, blood-borne diseases, circulatory problems, heart conditions, or diabetes may be advised against this procedure.

How does the treatment feel?

There may be some slight discomfort during the treatment. Injections are given with a needle, and several injections are administered. Some patients may experience a slight burning sensation when the solution is injected, but this is temporary and fades in a couple of minutes.

Instructions before treatment:

Patients are advised to wash legs thoroughly.  Do not use any type of moisturizer, lotion, sun-block or oils. Planning the treatment during a time when you can wear long pants for a few weeks is advised due to some typical bruising that may occur directly after the injections have been given.

Instructions after treatment:

For a couple of days following treatment, the compression tape and support hose will be required. Walking is recommended after treatment to help prevent blood clots; however, jogging or any jarring exercises to the legs should be avoided. It is advised to wait one month before beginning the second series of injections.

While cosmetic improvement is often a factor in using sclerotherapy to treat spider veins, Vein & Skin Laser Center understands that relief from pain is often the primary concern for patients in Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.
