Phlebectomy in Atlanta, GA

Vein & Skin Laser Center performs phlebectomy treatments for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.

Phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure that is effective and safe with good cosmetic results. Many patients prefer this to sclerotherapy because the vein disappears immediately, and with only one treatment. It can be used to treat small and large varicose veins.

The procedure only requires a local anesthetic and is done by making tiny punctures or incisions through which the varicose veins are removed. The incisions are so small that no stitches are required, and there are no scars. The patient can walk immediately and can return to light work and other activities the following day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a method for removing superficial varicose veins, as well as smaller superficial veins.

How does the treatment work?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy works by making small, one to two millimeter incisions above the veins that are going to be removed from the leg. Small hooks are placed below the vein and pulled up to grab and remove the vein in multiple segments. Once the vein is removed, compression garments are placed on the leg to facilitate healing.

How many treatments are required?

One treatment is usually all that is necessary to diminish the appearance of superficial veins. Additional treatments may be performed if more veins become swollen and visible.

Is Ambulatory Phlebectomy safe?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is safe, although it does involve a few risks and possible complications. These include vessel perforation, blood clots, vein inflammation, nerve damage, and infection. Typical side effects include bruising and swelling of the treated area.

Will there be any downtime?

There is no downtime after an Ambulatory Phlebectomy treatment. You may walk out of the office and return to your normal schedule immediately following treatment. Strenuous activities can be resumed after one week.

What are the benefits of Ambulatory Phlebectomy over other treatments?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy completely removes problematic veins in a quick, relatively pain-free procedure. There is also no downtime, whereas some procedures require a week of downtime.

Who are candidates for Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

Those with unsightly and painful reflux of the superficial veins are good candidates for Ambulatory Phlebectomy. Consult with your doctor to make sure Ambulatory Phlebectomy is the right treatment for you.

Who should avoid Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

Those with arterial circulation problems, an active rash, or an infection should avoid the procedure.

How does the treatment feel?

A local anesthetic is used to numb the area of the leg being treated, so little or no pain should be experienced.

What are the alternative treatments?

Vein Stripping is an alternative treatment in which the varicose veins are removed from the leg. There are also laser treatments that reduce the appearance of varicose veins, such as Closure, Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT), and Endovenous Laser Ablation of the Saphenous vein (ELAS).

Is additional treatment necessary?

Additional treatment is necessary only if superficial veins return or become infected after treatment.
