NEW USES FOR SCLEROTHERAPY

Many people think of spider veins when they hear the word sclerotherapy. “Oh, I’ve had that before,” is a comment that we hear a lot.   But sclerotherapy is not like it used to be. Sclerotherapy with Varithena (polidocanol) has been approved for treatment of varicose veins !  This new FDA approved product now makes sclerotherapy effective in treating varicose veins. Studies have proven its safety and effectiveness and it is easier to use in more tortuous, twisty veins . It also allows the treatment of tributary veins at the time of treatment.

Because Vein & Skin is committed to offering the most up to date treatments of varicose and spider veins, education is a continuous pursuit , whether through online courses, medical journals,   CME courses or professional meetings.   Phelebology, The Journal of Venous Disease (Royal Society of Medicine Journals) is my idea of fun reading!   No best- selling novels for me; the truth is stranger than fiction!

Another example of education is my recent trip to Boston to attend The XVII World Meeting of the International Union of Phlebology. This was the most comprehensive scientific program ever to be   dedicated to venous disease. More than 300 internationally recognized faculty and delegates from more than 25 international phlebological societies participated in this historic event, providing an international perspective unmatched by any other venous meeting to date.

One thing the international community has shown us is the effectiveness of using sclerotherapy to treat not just spider veins, but varicose veins.    We heard from international experts about how sclerotherapy has been used effectively; in fact, it has been a preferred treatment in Europe for years.

Not to be outdone, here in the states we now have a new product, Varithena, that is being used to perform sclerotherapy on varicose veins.  It is recently FDA approved and has been shown to be clinically effective in treating symptoms of pain, heaviness, swelling, fatigue, throbbing and itching.

Relief for the needle phobic patient! Because Varethena therapy is often less painful to patients, the need for numbing of the area to be treated is eliminated.    With other treatments, the patient’s leg is injected with an anesthetic before treatment .   This injection is about like going to the dentist and having novacaine to numb things up. But with Varethena, even that numbing injection is avoided. This is important for patients who are allergic to the anesthetic or who may be needle phobic.

We continue to offer the most up to date treatment of varicose and spider veins, now offering Varithena, thermal ablation (Closure) with both laser and radiofrequency, and sclerotherapy for varicose and spider veins and phlebectomy treatment.
