Getting Rid of Wrinkles

As much as we try to have perfect skin, there are certain natural “flaws” we can’t avoid — wrinkles being one of them. Wrinkles are essentially folds or creases that develop as a result of the collagen and elastic fibers in the skin losing their elasticity. One major factor that affects these parts of the skin is age.

As we grow older, our skin cells don’t divide and regenerate as quickly. This slowly causes our skin to lose its ability to heal quickly and generate natural oils, resulting in a dry and wrinkly appearance.

The ultraviolet rays in sunlight also contribute to the formation of wrinkles. When the skin is exposed to too much sun, the collagen and elastic fibers of the skin are eroded. This speeds up the aging progress and causes the skin to wrinkle and become stiff.

Wrinkles can also be caused by something as simple as the way we position our faces. Repeated facial expressions like smirking, frowning, or smiling, lead to the development of wrinkles by causing grooves to form underneath our skin. Over time, these grooves begin to appear as permanent facial features.

Activities like smoking can also put you at risk for developing wrinkles. According to MayoClinic.org, smoking speeds up the skin’s aging process. Cigarettes contain nicotine, a substance that stifles blood flow to your skin, preventing oxygen and vitamin A from nourishing the outer layers. The smoke from cigarettes also damages the skin’s collagen and elastic fibers.

Luckily, modern medicine offers several options for people who want to get rid of wrinkles. Topical medications like retinoids and anti-wrinkle creams are applied directly to the skin and contain antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acid, and substances derived from Vitamin A, each of which help to smooth out wrinkles and reduce rough skin.

Surgery is also an option for wrinkle reduction. Laser treatment surgery combats wrinkles by heating the dermis and stimulating new collagen fiber growth, allowing new, smoother skin to form. Treatment is also available in the form of Botox, or Botulinum Toxin Type A, a formula injected into the skin’s muscles that keeps them from tightening. When these muscles can’t contract, the skin looks less wrinkled. Procedures like dermabrasion and chemical peeling help to remove wrinkles by destroying some of the outermost layers of skin. When these layers are gone, more elastic skin begins growing in its place.
