EDUCATION IS POWER FOR THE PATIENT

The duplex ultrasound technology has dramatically advanced the diagnostic evaluation, making vein innovations in the treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency very beneficial to all patients. In addition to evaluations, the ultrasound can be used for patient education.

It is interesting to see the patient’s response to the ultrasound. Because we use the new innovative treatments every day, as physician we tend to take for granted that patients understand this technology and its various technical terms. But in reality, it can be “all Greek to them,” so it is extremely beneficial to actually show the ultrasound to the patient on their own leg. Most of the time, there is a look of wonder when they realize that they are actually seeing the blood flow in their own veins and can see where the problem is. Watching the blood flow in the wrong direction (down towards their feet rather than back up towards the heart) helps them to realize how their vein is not working properly.

So, our routine of showing our patients the ultrasound as it is being performed is a very important part of a vein evaluation because we feel than an informed patient is a confident patient. This process allows patients to understand the actual problem and have a meaningful dialog about the patient’s preferences and expectations. We think that the trust that this builds in the doctor-patient relationship is invaluable.

The end result of this whole educational process is that the patient is helped to make a more informed decision in the treatment of their varicose veins.   This is one part of the health care reform act that we totally agree with: Shared decision-making that is now being mandated by the health care reform act has been demonstrated to reduce unwarranted care.

More information is always better, and this is our commitment. Seeing your ultrasound scan while it is being performed, not getting a later report. Being a part of the process and discussing information and making decisions with the ultrasound tech and the doctor who will be the same ones there to do your procedure.
