Exercising with Varicose Veins

Many of my patients worry how varicose veins affect their active lives. While exercise can potentially be an effective treatment and prevention method for worsening veins, different exercises affect varicose veins in different ways.

Moderate, low-impact exercises are the best options when suffering from varicose and spider veins. Improved circulation and tone work well to slow the progression of the condition. These activities are encouraged to help improve flexibility, leg circulation, and muscle tone:

Be careful of vigorous, high-impact activities that involve jolting movements. These exercises may exasperate varicose veins and increase pressure and strain on lower legs, leaving you aching and in pain. Too much force can lead to accidents that may cause veins to collapse. Obtain physician’s approval before beginning these exercises:

Remember to stay in motion whenever possible. Stay active to help prevent blood from pooling excessively in your lower legs. Try not to neglect activity, but don’t work too hard on any given day. Discontinue activity if you notice worsening symptoms and increasing pain.
